Church of Our Lady tartous

The current cathedral was built in the mid-12th century (around 1145 AD) on the ruins of an older Byzantine church. Historical Christian tradition holds that Saint Peter ordered the construction of an altar or chapel on this site dedicated to the Virgin Mary, making it the first church in the world to bear the name of the Virgin Mary.
